More Than Music: Why EDM Festivals Are Taking Over College Culture

From flashing lights and loud bass to packed crowds and upbeat social media posts, EDM festivals have become one of the fastest growing entertainment trends among college students. Across the country, thousands of young adults attend concerts and festivals every year for music, shared culture, and an escape from everyday stress.

Electronic dance music, commonly known as EDM, has grown rapidly in popularity over the last decade. Festivals and live DJ sets attract massive crowds of young people, especially college students looking for entertainment and community. Many students say EDM festivals are different from traditional concerts because of the atmosphere and overall experience. Bright immersive visuals, loud music, lasers, fireworks, and energetic crowds create an environment that feels exciting and palpable. Fans often travel long distances, camp out and spend hundreds of dollars just to attend major festivals.

“EDM festivals feel more like an experience than just a concert,” said college student Antoinette Torre. “The lights, visuals, energy, and crowd all make it feel truly unreal.”

For many students, EDM festivals can also provide a temporary break from the stress of school, work, and everyday responsibilities. College students often balance classes, jobs, internships, and other various social pressures throughout the year. Festivals and concerts become opportunities for them to relax and enjoy time with their friends.

“A lot of students like me use music festivals as a way to escape the stress from school and life for a weekend,” Antoinette added.

Social media has played a vital role in helping EDM culture grow. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube constantly feature clips from festivals, DJ performances, and crowd reactions. Viral videos showing intricate visuals, stage designs, and audience energy encourage more and more people to attend events for themselves and become apart of the growing community.

Many students say they first became interested in EDM after seeing videos online. Festival “fits” (outfits), travel vlogs, and artist performances are now shared across all social media platforms daily. As a result, EDM festivals have become ingrained into modern youth culture.

Another reason for the popularity is the sense of community many people feel at these events and festivals. Fans often describe EDM concerts as welcoming environments where strangers connect through music. Unlike some other music scenes, EDM culture promotes positivity, freedom, and shared experiences among others.

“The energy is the utmost best part,” said college student Nicholas Lopez. “Everyone is there to have fun and everyone is so friendly it's amazing.”

However, despite the popularity of EDM festivals, many students and fans acknowledge the financial challenges involved. Ticket prices for large festivals can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars after adding hotels, transportation, food, and merchandise from their favorite artists. Some students save money for months or even a full year just to attend one specific event.

“They can get really expensive between tickets, AirBnB’s, transportation, and food,” Nicholas explained. “If there is one I would say that’s probably the biggest downside of it all.”

Even with the high costs, many students continue attending because they believe the experiences outweigh the costs.. Fans always say how festivals have memorable and unforgettable moments that they look forward to every single year.

“I think the memories and atmosphere make people want to go back every year, at least for me that is definitely one of the main reasons” Nicholas said.

Safety has also become a major topic surrounding large music festivals. This is because events attract huge crowds and people organizing the event must focus on crowd control, medical tents, and proper security. Some festivals have faced criticism in the past for overcrowding or unsafe conditions. As EDM events continue growing, many attendees believe organizers need to prioritize safety just as much as they do entertainment.

In my opinion, EDM festivals can be some of the most positive experiences for young adults and adults when organized responsibly and correctly. Music gives people a way to express themselves, connect with others, and temporarily forget about everyday stress. Festivals also allow fans to discover new artists and create long lasting memories with their friends.

At the same time, I believe ticket prices are becoming too expensive for many students. Large companies continue increasing prices because of higher demand, making some festivals difficult for the average college student to afford. I also think organizers should continue improving crowd management and security to make events safer for everyone attending.

Looking toward the future, EDM culture will likely continue growing because of social media and more advancements in technology. Festivals continue creating larger stages, better visuals, and more immersive experiences every year. More artists are also blending EDM with pop, rap, and other genres, helping electronic music reach a wider scope of audiences.

Overall, EDM festivals have become much more than simple concerts. For many college students, they represent entertainment, freedom, friendship, and community. As long as the culture continues evolving responsibly, EDM festivals will likely remain one of the most popular forms of live entertainment among young adults and adults for years to come.
