At just 23 years old, Dominick has already committed himself to one of the most demanding and dangerous careers in New York City: becoming an NYPD police officer. While many people his age are still discovering what they want to do with their lives, Dominick knew from a young age that he wanted to follow in his family's footsteps and dedicate his life to law enforcement.

Behind the badge is not just a police officer, but a hardworking, disciplined, and family-oriented young man who sacrifices his personal life every day to protect strangers.
For Dominick, becoming a police officer was never just a random career choice. Law enforcement has always been a major part of his life and family history. His dad and uncles are all police officers, so growing up, he was constantly surrounded by stories about the job, the challenges officers face, and the responsibilities that come with protecting the city. Some children grow up hearing stories about office jobs or businesses, but Dominick grew up listening to conversations about patrol shifts, emergencies, dangerous situations, and helping people during some of the worst moments of their lives.
His cousins are also police officers, and he explained that when they were younger, they often talked about their future careers together. Even as kids, they both dreamed about becoming police officers one day. “We used to talk about it all the time,” Dominick said. “We both always wanted to be cops.” Those childhood conversations eventually turned into reality. Seeing his family members dedicate themselves to law enforcement inspired him to pursue the same path and motivated him to work hard enough to achieve that goal.
Growing up in Lynbrook, New York, shaped Dominick into the person he is today. He described his childhood as supportive and family-oriented. His mother is a Christian woman who strongly believes in the power of prayer and faith. She always prayed for him to return home safe, especially after hearing recent incidents on the news. Dominick’s faith allowed him to keep calm and not think about the harm or danger he could be facing. His main focus was serving the community, protecting the people, and doing his job to the best of his ability. He explained that his parents always taught him the importance of hard work, respect,

discipline, and loyalty. Those lessons stayed with him throughout his life and became even more important once he entered the police academy. “I was always taught that if you want something, you have to work for it,” he explained. “Nothing is handed to you.”
Although he always knew he wanted to become a police officer, the process was far from easy. Becoming part of the NYPD required months of preparation, training, discipline, and sacrifice. The police academy challenged him mentally and physically every single day. He explained that there were moments when he felt exhausted, overwhelmed, and unsure of himself, but he continued pushing forward because he knew this was the career he truly wanted. “There were definitely times where I doubted myself,” he admitted. “But I kept reminding myself why I started.”
Today, Dominick works at the 109th Precinct in Queens, one of the busiest and most populated areas in New York City. The precinct covers neighborhoods including Flushing, Whitestone, College Point, Bayside, and Beechhurst. These neighborhoods are filled with constant activity, heavy traffic, businesses, families, and people from many different backgrounds and cultures. Working in such a large and busy area means that no two days are ever the same.
As an NYPD officer, Dominick’s responsibilities are unpredictable and demanding. His duties include responding to emergency calls, handling disputes, patrolling neighborhoods, assisting civilians, writing reports, and protecting the public. He explained that officers often enter situations without knowing exactly what they are walking into. “Every day is different,” he said. “You never know what kind of call you’re going to get or what situation you’ll face.” Some calls may involve helping someone in need, while others can quickly become dangerous and life-threatening.
One of the hardest realities of being a police officer is the emotional and physical stress that comes with the job. Dominick explained that police officers are never truly “off duty.” Even when they are home, spending time with family or friends, they still carry the mental weight of the profession. “You’re basically on call 24/7,” he explained. “You always have to be ready.” The job requires constant awareness because officers risk their lives every single day they put on the uniform.

Balancing work with family, relationships, friendships, and personal time has also been one of the biggest challenges he faces. Dominick admitted that the job can sometimes make it difficult to maintain a normal social life. There are times when he makes plans with family or friends, but suddenly has to cancel because work responsibilities come first. “Sometimes you make plans, and then you get called in and have to cancel everything,” he said. “That’s one of the hardest parts.” There are no weekends or holidays off. Even finding time to go to the gym, relax, or live stress-free can feel nearly impossible while carrying the pressure of such a demanding career.
Although the job is extremely difficult, Dominick says the most rewarding part of being a police officer is knowing that he can help people during some of the worst moments of their lives. Whether he is helping someone during an emergency, responding to a dangerous situation, or simply making someone feel safer, he believes those moments make the sacrifices worth it. “At the end of the day, you want to feel like you made a difference,” he explained.

His family remains one of the biggest sources of support and motivation in his life. He explained that having relatives who understand the realities of law enforcement helps him manage the stress and pressure that come with the career. His experiences have also helped him mature quickly and appreciate life differently. “This job changes you,” Dominick said. “You learn to appreciate life more and not take things for granted.”
Despite all the sacrifices, stress, and unpredictability that come with policing, Dominick remains proud of the career path he chose. At only 23 years old, he has already taken on responsibilities that many people cannot imagine. His story is not just about becoming a police officer — it is about family, sacrifice, discipline, and the determination to protect others even when the job becomes difficult. Behind the NYPD uniform is a young man who continues to work hard every day, not only to serve his city, but also to make his family proud.
We originally planned to conduct this interview in person so I could understand Dominick’s daily life as an NYPD officer and gather evidence for the interview. However, due to the unpredictable nature of police work, our plans quickly changed. On the day we planned to meet, Dominick became involved in an arrest that required him to remain at the precinct for nearly 24 hours, completing paperwork, processing the arrest, and handling responsibilities related to the situation. Because of this, we decided to complete the interview over the phone instead. In many ways, this unexpected change perfectly reflected the reality of his career. Police officers often have little control over their schedules, and personal plans can change instantly depending on what happens during a shift. “You never really know when your day is going to end,” Dominick explained. “One call can completely change everything.” Even though the interview did not happen face-to-face as planned, the experience highlighted the sacrifices and unpredictability that come with his profession.
