Residents in Long Beach are expressing growing concerns about public safety following multiple violent incidents connected to the area over the past several years. Community members say recent shootings, including a violent incident that occurred over Memorial Day weekend in 2026, have raised questions about safety, tourism, and the future of local businesses in the beach town.

The latest violence occurred on Monday, May 25, 2026, when one person was killed, and two others were injured during an overnight shooting incident in Long Beach. Reports stated that police responded to gunfire in the neighborhood late at night as investigators searched for suspects connected to the shooting.

For many residents, the recent shooting immediately brought back memories of another highly publicized violent incident near the Long Beach Long Island Rail Road station several years earlier. In June 2024, gunfire erupted near the Long Beach train station after large crowds gathered near the beach and boardwalk. Witnesses described panic as people ran from the area while police temporarily shut down train service during the investigation.

Some residents believe violence tends to increase during the summer when large crowds travel into Long Beach from neighboring areas, including Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. While some community members voiced concerns about outsiders causing disturbances, others said the issue should not be blamed entirely on where visitors come from and stressed that violence can happen anywhere.

“Long Beach has always been a peaceful beach town, but people definitely get nervous when they hear about shootings happening close to the boardwalk or train station,” said resident Anthony Russo. “A lot of people feel things have changed over the last few years.”

Others say they are worried about how these incidents could affect the city’s image during the busy summer season. Long Beach depends heavily on tourism, especially during warmer months when visitors travel to the beach, restaurants, bars, and boardwalk.

Local business owners say violent incidents can negatively impact customer traffic and make visitors feel uncomfortable about spending time in the area. One business owner who expressed concern was Paul, owner of the well-known Gino's Long Beach.

“When people hear about shootings on the news, it absolutely affects business,” Paul said. “Families come to Long Beach to enjoy the beach, restaurants, and the community. If people stop feeling safe, businesses suffer.”

Paul explained that summer is one of the most important seasons for local restaurants and shops. He said many business owners work hard to maintain Long Beach’s reputation as a welcoming beach community and worry that repeated violence could hurt tourism and customer confidence.

Residents also discussed concerns surrounding large summer gatherings and overcrowding near the boardwalk and train station areas. Some community members said stronger crowd control, increased police patrols, and better communication between

law enforcement and residents could help improve safety during major weekends and events.

The Long Beach Police Department has continued to increase patrols and monitor activity throughout the city during busy weekends. Police officials have stated that public safety remains a top priority and encouraged residents to report suspicious activity.

Following the train station shooting in 2024, shots were fired near the Long Beach LIRR station after a large crowd gathered near the beach and boardwalk area. According to reports, police said disputes broke out among a crowd of nearly 2,000 young adults before gunshots were fired near the station. At least one person was injured, and police temporarily suspended train service during the investigation. Witnesses described confusion and fear as crowds scattered after hearing gunshots. Law enforcement agencies from Long Beach and Nassau County responded quickly to secure the area and begin investigating the incident.

Some residents believe social media coverage has also intensified fear surrounding crime in Long Beach. Videos and online discussions about violent incidents often spread quickly, causing concern among both residents and tourists.

“I still love Long Beach, and I think it’s a great place to live,” said resident Jessica Marino. “But I do think people want to see stronger safety measures so everyone feels comfortable again.”

Despite concerns, many residents say they remain proud of their community and hope Long Beach continues to be known for its beaches, restaurants, and family-friendly atmosphere rather than violence. Community members say cooperation between residents, businesses, and police will be important moving forward.

As summer begins, conversations about public safety are continuing throughout Long Beach. Residents and business owners alike hope city officials and law enforcement can work together to prevent future violence and maintain the strong sense of community that Long Beach is known for.
